PCB design tips that survive contact with the fab

The habits that separate a board that works from a board that comes back. Filter by topic, or search across the whole reference.

// Ruleset

PCBSync Engineering Rules

A practical, fab-friendly default rule set. Standard values clear most manufacturers; advanced values need a capable house — always confirm against your fabricator's capability sheet. Click any value to copy it.

Read the units. Rules are given in mils (thou) with metric in brackets — 1 mil = 0.0254 mm. These are conservative starting points marked as the PCBSync Engineering rule set, not a substitute for your fab's DRC file.

IPC standards for PCB design

IPC standards are the shared language between designer, fabricator and assembler. Know which document governs each decision — footprints, stackup, acceptance, data hand-off.

Standard Title What it governs You use it for

No standards match .

IPC Class 1

General electronics

Consumer products where the main requirement is a functioning board. Lowest acceptance bar.

IPC Class 2

Dedicated service

Industrial and most commercial gear needing sustained performance and longer life. The common default.

IPC Class 3

High reliability

Aerospace, medical, defence — where downtime is not an option. Tightest tolerances and inspection.
